my DIY aviary and its new residents

I've always been fascinated by birds and their mannerisms, movement, flight. Several years ago I adopted a pair of zebra finches. They were fun to watch and it wasn't long before there were eggs and fledglings. The cage filled up and I couldn't bare to see them with such little flight room. Rather than get more cages, I decided to make my own larger cage - or aviary.

Using some "bones" from an old wardrobe, I added supports, mesh and even made a sliding bottom drawer tray for easy cleaning.

There are new residents in the house these days. Foster (a canary mix), a society finch we call "Cricket" because of his chirpy song, and a pair of orange-cheeked waxbills - yet unnamed. I tried to photograph them - but they're pretty quick and the mesh messes with my cam's focus.

What sort of mesh did you use?

chinamama said...

I used a 1/4" mesh because i've got some small finches in there. larger birds (canaries and up) could probably handle larger. It's metal and isn't plasicoated or anything. Does that help? Are you making one?!? I wanna see! :-) cheers, A

Hello! I was wondering where did you buy the mesh? I have an old dog kennel and i was going to wire on some mesh around it so i could put my finches in there. Im breeding society finches and there cage is WAY to small for even them more or less when they have babies. So please where can i get some mesh? I was going to use chicken wire till i saw your pics after google-ing DIY finch cage and i know chicken wire will be to big.. so mesh is what im going for now! thanks! Please email me back at Yonggbaek@gmail.com if this comment thing doesnt already do that O.o thank you again!

You are a genius!

At my grandma's assisted living facility, they had an aviary of this size and shape with multiple birds. I decided then and there that if we ever do get birds, I'd have to make something big like that. But this, my dear, is fan-freaking-tastic.

I especially love the big drawer for cleaning.

What is the wire made out of? is it galvanized? if so its toxic to birds. Chicken wire is toxic to birds. Stainless steel wire is the only safe thing to use if you don't buy Pre-made powder coated cages.

This is soooo cool! It has inspired me to make my own as well...I'm a bit stumped on the mesh...you say it is metal..where did you get it???? I can only find galvanized and it's driving me crazy!!! Did you use galvanized and "wash" it with vinegar??? Any help would be appreciated....Thanks!!!!

Thank you...this is not only cool but a great way to reduce land fill objects while adding to the charm of our room! A bigger bonus, our birds will love it and we'll be able to add a few finches to our nest:)

Wow, I hope to find an old dresser someone has out to the curb! Our bird would love this! What a very creative idea!

I feel like this is a stupid question, but I was wondering if all your birds live harmoniously together or did you split the aviary into sections? Also, what kind of mesh did you use? This is beautiful!!!!!

would you consider making one of these and selling it?

I used the plans on http://www.EasyAviary.info and built my bird an aviary VERY cheap and easily! It was the best decision I've ever made for her. To my family and I, it just made economic sense to build a DIY aviary. We spent a fraction of the cost of buying an expensive pre-built one that just have to be assembled anyway...why pay inflated prices for material? The guide on that website is so very easy to follow and it doesn't matter if you're a total beginner like us. We were on a very small budget and found so many wonderful plans for our aviary...it was hard to pick just one, but the one we chose is terrific! We actually built the one that is featured on the website's homepage. Our bird finally has the aviary we've dreamed of and it was VERY affordable!

Would anyone be willing to build a similar cage? I'm hoping to buy an antique looking cage for my cockatoo like this one and would love it if anybody would be willing to help me! Unfortunately I'm' very bad with these kinds of things and don't really have time! However, if anyone would like to build one, if you could please just email me a price I would really appreciate it! I would be willing to pay well for quality work!! Thank you!
